The layer mask is a tool in Photoshop used to limit the view of an image to a certain selected area. Monochrome colors can be used to expand or shrink the visible area. By painting with black, view is limited. By painting with white, the view is restored. Unlike the eraser tool, the layer mask does not destroy or permanently delete any pixels of the picture being worked with. Though, through observation of use of the layer mask, it may seem like pixels are being obliterated in the process of secluding a certain area of the picture, in reality, they are only being hidden, and can be brought back by painting with white at any point.
